How I built a Chrome extension to make my language learning easier

Sergei Almazov3 min read

In a world increasingly driven by AI, I’ve been exploring how technology can enhance everyday learning experiences. Recently, I developed a Chrome extension that integrates with LM Studio, leveraging advanced language models like Llama and Qwen, to provide instant grammar explanations for selected text on any webpage.

The Problem

As someone who enjoys diving into new languages, I’ve often faced the challenge of making sense of complex grammar in real time. Traditional tools, while useful, tend to interrupt the flow of reading and learning, making the process less intuitive.

So, I set out to create something better—a seamless, context-aware tool that enhances language learning without disrupting it. Let me share how I built my latest Chrome extension, blending my love for invention with my journey as a language enthusiast.

The Solution

The extension I built transforms how users interact with grammar explanations. Here’s how it works:

  1. Select a Phrase or Sentence: Users can highlight any text on a webpage.
  2. Access the Context Menu: By right-clicking, they can select the “Explain Grammar” option.
  3. Instant Feedback: Within moments, the extension generates a detailed grammar explanation and contextual examples, displayed in a user-friendly popup.

The explanations are powered by LM Studio, running locally to ensure data privacy and speed. The AI models process the selected text and divide the response into two clear sections: Grammar Explanation and Examples.

Key Features

1. Seamless Integration

The extension fits naturally into the browser experience. It doesn’t interrupt workflows, making it ideal for both casual browsing and deep learning sessions.

2. Clean and professional design

I wanted the user interface to be as intuitive as the functionality itself. Inspired by macOS design principles, the popup features a modern, minimalist layout with rounded corners, subtle gradients, and a focus on readability. I also admire early macOS design of Tiger / Leopard era, so I wanted to create a resemblance of it.

3. Real-time AI processing

By leveraging local language models, the extension provides near-instant responses. This avoids reliance on cloud-based AI tools, ensuring both speed and data security.

4. Educational Value

Each explanation is divided into structured sections:

  • Grammar Analysis: A clear breakdown of the text’s grammatical components.
  • Examples: Real-life usage examples to contextualize the explanation.

The Technology Behind the Extension

This project integrates several components:

  • Chrome Extension APIs for seamless browser interaction.
  • LM Studio for managing local inference of models like Llama and Qwen.
  • Frontend Development for building an interactive and polished UI.
  • Local AI Models to maintain speed, privacy, and control over the data.

Potential Applications

While the current version focuses on grammar, the framework is versatile. It could easily be extended to other areas, such as:

  • Explaining complex mathematical equations.
  • Analyzing literary devices in text.
  • Providing historical context for selected passages.

Next Steps

This is a proof of concept and many things could be definitely improved. Like a response time, llm could be different, visual formatting could be better, more structured.

This project is just the beginning. I envision expanding its functionality, refining the design further, and exploring other ideas.

Closing Thoughts

The intersection of AI and education holds immense potential. By making learning tools more intuitive and accessible, we can empower individuals to engage with information more effectively.

I’m excited to continue exploring this space and welcome feedback, questions, or collaboration opportunities from others in the AI and education communities.

If this resonates with you, or you see applications for this kind of technology in your field, let’s connect. I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas.
